The Story Behind Paralegals Connect

People often ask me why I created Paralegals Connect.

The answer is simple: I created the community I wish I had while I was in paralegal school and during the early years of my career when I had the most questions.

School did not come easily for me. I have always learned a little differently than many people. There were times when I had to read assignments several times before they finally clicked, and I often spent far longer studying than many of my classmates just to understand the material. There were plenty of moments when I questioned whether I was smart enough to succeed.

But I refused to give up.

Through determination, persistence, and countless late nights of studying, I graduated at the top of my class with a 4.0 GPA and was inducted into the LEX Honor Society. Looking back, I realized that success isn’t always about learning quickly. Sometimes it’s simply about refusing to quit.

Although I began my legal career in 2003, when I transitioned into litigation in 2013, I learned that graduating was only the beginning. Every day presented new questions and challenges. Attorneys are incredibly busy, and while many are wonderful mentors, there isn’t always time to answer every question a paralegal has. I often wished I had someone to ask without feeling like I was interrupting someone’s day or asking too many questions.

At the time, there was no AI. There were very few online resources. Facebook groups like this didn’t exist, and I didn’t know other paralegals I could turn to for advice. I remember thinking, “There has to be a better way.”

So in 2013, I started a small Facebook group called Paralegals Connect.

Originally, it wasn’t meant to become what it is today. I simply wanted a place where paralegals could ask questions, share ideas, learn from one another, and support each other through the challenges of this profession.

In the beginning, I posted every single day just to keep conversations going. I answered as many questions as I could and encouraged members to participate. Before long, something incredible happened.

The members began teaching each other.

Experienced paralegals generously shared their knowledge with students. New paralegals found mentors. Complete strangers began helping one another solve difficult problems, offering encouragement, sharing forms, explaining procedures, and celebrating one another’s successes.

The answers being shared by our members became even better than anything I could have provided on my own.

That’s when I realized this community had become something much bigger than me.

Today, Paralegals Connect has grown into one of the largest online communities dedicated to legal professionals, with more than 51,680 combined Facebook Group members and 23,000 email subscribers. What began as a place for one paralegal to ask questions has become a trusted community where legal professionals learn, collaborate, mentor one another, and build lasting professional relationships every day.

One question I’m often asked is why I don’t allow employment posts or advertising in the main group. The answer goes back to the original purpose of Paralegals Connect. I wanted this to remain a true support community.

My goal has always been to create a place where members feel comfortable asking questions without fear of being judged, criticized, or made to feel like their question isn’t important. Every experienced paralegal was once brand new, and none of us learned this profession overnight.

That’s why we have always had a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, personal attacks, or negative comments intended to intimidate or embarrass other members. I want Paralegals Connect to be a place where someone can ask what they think is a “simple” question and receive helpful, respectful answers instead of criticism.

The same philosophy applies to employment posts and advertising. If job postings were allowed every day, they would quickly dominate the newsfeed and bury the discussions that make this community valuable. That’s why we created the Paralegals Connect Employment Board, giving employers and job seekers their own dedicated space while keeping the main group focused on education, collaboration, and professional support.

Advertising follows the same principle. Rather than allowing unlimited promotional posts, we created our Preferred Partner Program, which allows carefully selected organizations to share valuable resources with our members while preserving the purpose and integrity of the group. Protecting the culture of this community has always been more important to me than allowing unlimited promotions.

Being a paralegal completely changed my life. I didn’t come from wealth, and life certainly didn’t follow the path I expected. There were seasons when I found myself raising my children on my own, responsible for providing everything they needed. Because of this profession, I was able to build a stable career, purchase a home, support my family, and create opportunities that once felt out of reach.

Years ago, I dreamed of attending law school. But as a mother, I also knew I didn’t want to sacrifice even more time away from my children. Instead, I chose to continue building my career as a paralegal, and it proved to be one of the best decisions I could have made.

Over time, I discovered that with dedication, experience, and a strong work ethic, paralegals can build incredibly successful and rewarding careers. The profession gave me financial independence, confidence, and the ability to provide for my family through some of life’s most difficult seasons.

That experience shaped how I encourage others today.

I have a special place in my heart for women rebuilding their lives after divorce, overcoming difficult relationships, or simply looking for a career that offers stability and opportunity. I believe every person deserves the ability to support themselves and create a life built on confidence and independence. To me, a healthy relationship is one where two people stand beside each other as partners—not where one person must depend entirely on the other.

The paralegal profession gave me that independence, and I will always be grateful for it.

Looking back, I realize Paralegals Connect has never really been about answering legal questions. It’s about giving people the confidence to keep going. Sometimes all someone needs is one encouraging answer, one person willing to help, or one reminder that they’re capable. If this community has provided that for even one person, then it has accomplished exactly what I hoped it would.

More than a decade later, the mission of Paralegals Connect remains exactly the same: to create the supportive community I wish I had while I was in paralegal school and during the early years of my career.

If this community helps one student believe in themselves, helps one new paralegal find the answer they desperately needed, helps one experienced professional share their knowledge with the next generation, or helps one parent discover a career that changes their family’s future, then every late night, every conversation, and every hour spent building Paralegals Connect has been worth it.
