Wait… National Paralegal Day is in AUGUST?! By Crystal Cornett, Founder of Paralegals Connect

If you're a paralegal, you probably had the same reaction I did the first time someone wished me a Happy National Paralegal Day on August 6...
"Wait... what? Isn't Paralegal Day in October?" If that's what you were thinking, you're not alone. For many years, there wasn't one officially recognized National Paralegal Day. Instead, many state bar associations, paralegal associations, and law firms celebrated the profession on October 23. Several states, including Texas, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, officially recognize October 23 as Paralegal Day. In Texas, October 23 has special significance. The State Bar of Texas was the first state bar association in the nation to establish a separate division dedicated to paralegals. To recognize that milestone, the Texas Legislature designated October 23 as Texas Paralegal Day, and it has been celebrated ever since. So if you've spent years celebrating in October... You weren't celebrating the wrong day. You were celebrating the day your state chose to recognize one of the greatest professions there is. Then, in 2024, the American Bar Association (ABA), National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA), NALS, and the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE) came together to officially establish August 6 as National Paralegal Day. The date wasn't chosen at random. It commemorates August 6, 1968, when the American Bar Association created its Special Committee on Lay Assistants, an important milestone in the recognition and advancement of the paralegal profession nationwide. So yes... It's going to take some getting used to. For many of us, October has been "Paralegal Day" for decades. Every year, I'll probably catch myself looking at the calendar in October and thinking, "Happy Paralegal Day!" Old habits die hard. The good news? We don't have fewer reasons to celebrate. We have more. August 6 is now recognized as National Paralegal Day, while many states continue to celebrate October 23 as their official state Paralegal Day. Personally... I think that's pretty awesome. If anyone deserves two opportunities each year to be recognized, it's paralegals. For years, many of us looked forward to October. Even if our firms didn't officially celebrate Paralegal Day, it was still a chance for us to recognize one another and celebrate the important work paralegals do every day. If I'm being honest, throughout my career I worked at several firms that celebrated Administrative Professionals Day each year, but despite my best efforts and suggestions, Paralegal Day often went unrecognized. Maybe that's one of the reasons this profession means so much to me. Paralegals are the backbone of the legal profession. We keep cases moving, manage deadlines, organize trial notebooks, communicate with clients, solve problems before anyone else even knows they exist, and somehow always know exactly where that one document is when it's needed most. Our work deserves to be recognized. That's one of the many reasons I'm excited that we now have an officially recognized National Paralegal Day.
Most people never see everything a paralegal does behind the scenes. But we do. And we know how much this profession matters. When I created Paralegals Connect in 2013, my goal was simple. I wanted to build the paralegal support group I wish I had during paralegal school and in the early years of my career when I had the most questions. I never imagined that one day this community would grow to more than 55K members across our Facebook groups, connecting legal professionals from around the world. What amazes me most isn't the size of the community. It's the generosity of the people in it. Every single day I see experienced paralegals take time out of their busy schedules to answer questions from someone they've never met. I see members sharing templates, explaining difficult legal concepts, celebrating promotions, encouraging students, helping someone prepare for an interview, or simply reminding another paralegal that they're not alone. That's what this profession is all about. Supporting one another. Lifting each other up. Sharing what we've learned so the next generation has an easier path than we did. So whether you're celebrating on August 6... Or you'll still find yourself smiling when October rolls around... I hope you'll take a moment to celebrate just how important paralegals are to the legal profession. Whether your firm celebrates National Paralegal Day or not, I hope you take a moment to celebrate yourself. You chose a profession that is challenging, rewarding, and absolutely essential to the legal system. You make a difference every single day, whether anyone says "thank you" or not. And if no one tells you this week... Happy National Paralegal Day. From one paralegal to another, thank you for everything you do. That's also one of the reasons I created Paralegals Connect—to make sure paralegals always have a community that recognizes, supports, and celebrates one another. — Crystal Cornett Founder, Paralegals Connect
